Successful Thacher Park Center Fundraiser

Supporters of John Boyd Thacher State Park gathered at the home of Jeff Thomas in East Berne on November 3 to raise funds for the new Thacher Park Center. Mr. Thomas, whose home abuts the park, has been a generous supporter of the new park centerpiece, which is expected to open this winter. The much-anticipated four-season building will serve as a gateway for visitors wanting to learn about Thacher’s recreational offerings, as well as its geological and cultural significance.

The campaign, led by the Open Space Institute, and its partners the Saratoga/Capital Region State Parks Commission and the Natural Heritage Trust, has raised nearly $700,000 toward its one million dollar goal.  Through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s NY Parks 2020 initiative, New York State is investing $3.8 million in the project. The funds raised by the campaign will enhance the new building with engaging and educational exhibits and interpretive materials.

Long dedicated to the protection of Thacher Park, OSI safeguarded more than 1,000 acres of land along the Helderberg Escarpment – doubling the size of the original park.  For more information about the campaign, or to sponsor a brick paver, tree, or stone bench at the new Thacher Park Center, visit thacherparkcenter.org.
